Understanding Composable ERP: A New Approach to Business Agility

Dorota Owczarek - August 28, 2024

Composable business starts with three core elements: creative thinking that ensures innovation remains at the forefront, a flexible business architecture that promotes adaptability and resilience, and cutting-edge technologies that serve as the tools for today and tomorrow. In today’s dynamic business environment, the shift towards composable ERP systems is a natural evolution. These systems allow businesses to integrate packaged business capabilities seamlessly, enabling them to swiftly adapt to changing market conditions and customer needs. As organizations move away from rigid legacy systems, the focus on composable procurement and flexible ERP solutions becomes crucial for maintaining a competitive edge.

Curious about how these advancements are reshaping the way businesses operate and how they can transform your own organization? Read on to discover the key benefits and strategies for leveraging composable ERP in your procurement processes.

From Monolithic Giants to Agile Composability: The Evolution of ERP Systems

For years, ERP systems have been the backbone of enterprise operations, providing a monolithic structure that integrated various business capabilities under one roof. However, as today’s dynamic business environment demands greater flexibility and faster responses, the limitations of these traditional ERP systems have become increasingly apparent.

Recognizing the need for change, Gartner coined the term Composable ERP - Gartner research to describe a new approach where businesses can assemble and reassemble their ERP components—often referred to as packaged business capabilities—to swiftly adapt to evolving market conditions.

This shift from monolithic to composable ERP systems allows organizations to move away from the rigid structures of legacy systems and embrace a more flexible, modular approach. Instead of being tied down by a single ERP vendor or technology, companies can now leverage new solutions and technologies that are tailored to their specific needs.

For example, composable procurement enables businesses to integrate best-in-class tools and services into their existing ERP platforms, enhancing their ability to respond to market conditions and improve customer satisfaction.

This approach not only enhances agility but also empowers businesses to implement new capabilities quickly, ensuring they remain at the forefront of their industries.

Understanding Composable ERP

Composable ERP represents a shift from traditional, monolithic ERP systems to more flexible, modular architectures. Instead of relying on a single, all-encompassing solution, composable ERP allows businesses to build their ERP system piece by piece, selecting the best-fit components that meet their specific needs.

Here’s what makes composable ERP different:

  • You have the freedom to choose and integrate different business capabilities based on what your organization needs most. This flexibility lets you adapt to changing market conditions or customer preferences without overhauling your entire system.
  • With composable ERP, you can add new technologies and tools as they become available. This means your ERP system can evolve alongside your business, always staying current with the latest advancements.
  • Unlike traditional systems, where you’re locked into a single ERP vendor, composable ERP lets you pick and mix components from different ERP vendors. This way, you’re not tied down to one provider and can select the best tools from a variety of sources.
  • The modular nature of composable ERP makes it easier to maintain and update. Instead of waiting for large, disruptive upgrades, you can implement incremental changes that keep your system up to date without major downtime.
  • For organizations dealing with legacy systems, composable ERP provides a pathway to modernization. You can start by integrating new components with your existing infrastructure, gradually moving away from outdated technologies without a massive, costly overhaul.

What Systems Constitute a Composable ERP Ecosystem

A composable ERP ecosystem is built from various integrated systems and tools, each serving a specific function within your organization. Here’s a breakdown of what typically makes up this ecosystem:

  • Core ERP system (foundational platform that handles essential business operations and integrates data from additional dedicated solutions)
  • Customer relationship management (CRM) (manages interactions with current and potential customers, improving customer satisfaction and driving sales growth)
  • Supply chain management (SCM) (oversees the flow of goods and services, ensuring efficient and cost-effective operations from raw materials to finished products)
  • Procurement systems (streamlines procurement processes, including supplier management, purchase orders, and procurement data analysis)
  • Human capital management (HCM) (supports HR functions like recruitment, employee management, payroll, and benefits administration)
  • Business intelligence (BI) tools (provides advanced analytics and reporting, turning data into actionable insights for better decision-making)
  • eCommerce platforms (integrates online sales channels with the ERP system for seamless order processing and inventory management)
  • Warehouse management systems (WMS) (optimizes warehouse operations, including inventory tracking, picking, packing, and shipping)
  • Financial management systems (FMS) (handles accounting, budgeting, and financial reporting to ensure compliance and financial control)
  • Integration platforms (connects various systems and tools within the ERP ecosystem, ensuring seamless data flow and communication between components)
  • Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning tools (enhances decision-making, automates routine tasks, and provides predictive analytics to improve business operations)

Benefits of Composable ERP

Composable ERP offers a range of advantages that empower businesses to stay agile and responsive in a rapidly changing environment:

  • Flexibility: Easily adapt to changing business needs.
  • Scalability: Grow your ERP system with your business.
  • Integration: Seamlessly connect with existing tools and platforms.
  • Cost-Efficiency: Optimize spending by implementing only what you need.
  • Agility: Swiftly adapt to new market conditions and opportunities.
  • Innovation: Leverage the latest technologies without overhauling your entire system.

Point Solutions in a Composable ERP Ecosystem (with examples!)

composable ERP leverages packaged business capabilities and point solutions—small, specialized tools designed to optimize specific business functions without disrupting the entire system. These solutions can be easily integrated with existing ERP systems through APIs or data streams, making them highly flexible and efficient.

Point solutions function like small lego blocks that improve or automate essential business processes. These tools are layered on top of existing ERP systems, allowing organizations to enhance their business capabilities without the need for a complete system overhaul. Here are a few examples of point solutions that can be integrated into a composable ERP ecosystem:
